After the turn of the 20th century, over 12,000 individual piano brand names were in existence. Immediately prior to 1950, there were thousands of piano manufacturers in
existence. Today in 2019, there are less than a few hundred piano brand names produced, the half of
which are only “stencil pianos”, made by manufacturers of a different origin.
"Stencil pianos" are classified as companies who own, license, or manufacturer brands of pianos, different from their own company name, or brand.
Different models of stencil pianos belonging to an individual brand name, are often manufactured in a facility or country that is separate and different from the company's headquarters or main factory location(s) (see an example, here).
These separate facilities produce models of two or more separate brands and/or company piano name.
Example of a stencil piano manufacturer: Kawai of Japan manufactures Boston pianos, for Steinway & Sons of New York.
We have provided links to several piano manufacturers, so that you can research for yourself, firsthand, the differences and similarities of these piano manufacturers, from their own respective sources.
We do not have control over the content of these external webpages, nor do we endorse these pianos, services, products, or other information you will encounter on these sites.
Like most companies who may merge with another company, or who may discontinue products and services, or who may move their factory to another company or location, piano manufacturers have been known to change hands in company ownership and oversight from time to time.
Such major changes as a company's structure, brands and models manufactured, as well as factory production methods and processes may change from time to time.
