Q: How many pianos exist in the world?
A: Tens upon tens of millions.
Q: How many piano technicians / tuners exist in the world, to service them?
A: Not enough.
As this blog post is being written, I had to re-read the title a few times, just to allow it to sink in. '... booked, years in advance.'
At first, you may wonder, "who or what is so important and so necessary, that I need to set an appointment, weeks and months in advance, just to get my piano serviced?"
If this statement is so unbelievable, try to book an appointment at this this fulfillment center to tour, in the United States, by this year.
Great institutions require great responsibility. And to put it simply, people must actually be available, to run them, and to be present to fulfill the responsibility for the institution to exist.
The Piano Technicians Guild (PTG) in North America, in 2018, currently services over 6,000 members. Some are active in the trade, while others are not. Add in a few thousand more, who work independently outside of the organization. Let's be generous and say, 10,000 total.
Europe has over 5,000 piano technicians.
South America, Australia, and Asia combined, adds another 5,000.
This
is close to >20,000 piano technicians in the world, who are on call,
ready to travel, and who can be called on at any moment to come and service
your piano (or at least to tune it, properly). [Advertisement reads; 'Have tuning fork, tuning hammer, and
mutes. Will travel'].
It would not be a stretch of the imagination, nor a stretch of the truth, if most piano technicians, who have been tuning pianos with little to no advertising, and who have worked in the trade for over >10 years have clients numbering into the thousands.
They may or may not be qualified at what they do. They may or may not have a strong, satisfied clientele. They may or may not like you. And you may not like them, either (but they are very likeable, from my experience. Think patient person = kind person = piano person).
The truth remains: Piano tuners and piano technicians are in high demand, and in short supply (and not on patience, as you'll come to find out).
Good ones are in even higher demand.
And great ones are almost always booked solid.
The bottom line is - and the truth be told: Piano technicians are in short supply. So book ALL of your appointments early and often, as necessary.
